About hypnosis and hypnotherapy
Hypnotherapy uses the state of hypnosis for therapeutic benefit. Hypnosis is a natural state that we drift in and out of all day long. We go into a hypnotic trance when we are so into a book or film on the TV that we tune everything else around us out. The way time seems to pass without you noticing when you’re driving a car happens because you have been in a trance state.
Inner focus of hypnosis
Perhaps the most blissful example of hypnosis and trance is when you’re falling asleep at night. Your body becomes more and more relaxed as your mind starts to drift deeper and deeper into your own inner world. You’re not fully awake but you’re not quite asleep, and you are still aware of things going on around you. Instead of your focus being on a book, film or driving your car, your focus is on your own inner thoughts and feelings. This is the state we try to achieve in hypnotherapy, and you might be surprised to learn that it can be achieved just through conversation – and even with your eyes open.
The therapeutic trance
When you are in this relaxed state your heart rate and breathing slow down and your ‘thinking’ brain takes a rest. Like this we can begin to work with your subconscious mind, always while you are fully aware. This relaxed state is a great place to do therapeutic work as it allows your conscious ‘active’ mind to step aside for a while. This grants access to your own unconscious resources and innate wisdom. In this state you are more open to new learning and to greater understanding.

This is a great animation explaining the incredible power of the mind over our bodies. This is really worth watching for anyone that still needs convincing about the importance of attending to our mental health to keep our physical selves healthy.
